My annual reminder:
Before Martin Luther King Day is gone let me voice a quiet regret. It is not to the day itself. It is not to having it on Dr King’s birthday. It is the naming of it. It should be called something like Civil Rights Day. While honoring Dr King is a good thing the emphasis on him alone takes away from others who are as deserving. Many others worked as tirelessly and also risked their lives every day. To name a few before next Monday is gone: James Farmer, Roy Wilkins, Ralph Abernathy, Thurgood Marshal, the Barragan brothers, Robert kennedy; not to mention those, both black and white, who were murdered, Viola Liuzzo comes to mind.
